McCaskill was elected to the United States Senate in November 2006, but she has already distinguished herself as an independent voice in Congress. Her work on improving the treatment of America's service members at Walter Reed Medical Center has earned her national attention. She recently was recognized by one publication for being the most independent voice among the Senate's freshman members.
McCaskill currently sits on five Senate committees, including Armed Services, Homeland Security and Government Affairs, Aging, Commerce, and Indian Affairs.
